Health: Does sugar increase the chance of getting cancer?

The relationship between cancer and Sugar now seems to be more than clear: Experts have studied the behavior of the genes of cancer patients and found that sugar consumption does nothing but nourish the tumor.

The search speaks clearly

According to a new research published in Nature Communications, eating sugary foods does nothing but increase the tumor. Johan Thevelein, Wim Versees, and Veerle Janssens have begun researching the link between sugar and cancer in 2008 to try to better understand what is called the Warburg effect, i.e. when cancer cells receive energy through rapid glucose distribution by feeding tumor growth.

Thevelein, of KU Leuven, Belgium, stated that research was able to explain the correlation between the strength of Warburg effect and tumor aggression, and this is because the link between sugar and cancer has profound implications. The results obtained are a basis for future research in this area, which now - scientists say - can be performed with much more precise and relevant attention.

Eliminate the consumption of sugars?

The match for the research team has been here, but the study did not prove to be a real medical discovery; Moreover, the results would not demonstrate that following a low-sugar diet could modify a cancer diagnosis. “The results are not enough to identify the primary cause of the Warburg effect," Thevelein said in a statement.

“Further research will be needed to find out if this is really the primary cause of the disease.”

Victoria Stevens, a cancer researcher with the American Cancer Society, who was not involved in the study, called "excellent" research, and commented that this is a small step in a long process.

“The Warburg effect could be a cause of cancer, but the results are still far behind to assert it with certainty, " said Victoria Stevens.

VIB, KU Leuven and Vrije Universities Brussels conducted the study. VIB is a life science research institute that works with five universities, including KU Leuven, and is funded by the Flemish Government.
